bkSOUL, born in November 2001, builds a community of artists who
share
culture, language and soul. Grounded in rhythm and beats, drawing from
movement traditions from hiphop, African, Asian and modern dance to
contact and improvisation, bkSOUL redefines hiphop through body,
sound
and spoken word. We are the children of hiphop culture. We are b-boys
and b-girls, emcees, DJ's and Graph writers. We embody a house of
artists creating a paradigm to experience hiphop through a postmodern
framework, bridging the community of hiphop lovers to the arts
community
and beyond.
The four walls of our house:
- against the north wall we see the dreams, hopes and fears of
people of color;
- the south wall reflects our relationships re-imagined and re-told
within a landscape of bodies moving in and out of time and
weight;
- looking east we see history married with personal truths;
- and in the west, a complex, fluid identity.
Bridging barriers both personal and social to shape our lives, we
believe that our passion and our openness to truth reveal the soul,
bkSOUL.
