A collaboration of bkSOUL and Collective Purpose, Hip Hop Saved My Life is a celebration of Hip Hop through spoken word, dance, music and art! With the familiar background of beats, music, and lyrics, this performance is a critique of, and tribute to, the space, voice, and progressive nature of America's newest indigenous art form: Hip Hop. This program is a dynamic and moving presentation of body and soul, imploring the audience to undergo a fantastic journey from the beginning of the underground Hip Hop Student groups will also perform at this event.
 
Performances will be from 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and a dance party/meet and greet with the artists and DJs will be from 9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Hip Hop Saved My Life Heroes: Hip Hop Saved My Life! will pay tribute to some of the foundational artists of the Hip Hop scene. Celebrating the heroes of Hip Hop: DJ Kool Herc, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lauryn Hill, Crazy Legs (Richard Colon) and MC Lyte. Hip Hop itself is also praised as a hero in the resistance of urban culture to succomb to mainstream pressure to assimilate. Infusing messages of progress and hope in the lyrics, spoken word, and the dancers movement, the performance addresses pop culture undertones of racism, misogyny, violence, & mindless entertainment present in mainstream music.

Ticket prices are $10-students/$12-SDMA members/$15-general admission; group discounts are available for groups of ten or more.
